Guiding Principles for a Values-Based Community

The College of Engineering community recognizes the importance of a positive culture within the College, as well as its impact on productivity and the student and employee experience. Given the value placed on diversity, collaboration, and engagement, the College acknowledges the responsibility faculty and staff members hold in interactions with each other. This is in addition to the role we have in supporting student success.

The College is at its best when faculty and staff work together in harmony — creatively, inclusively, and fearlessly.

To reach our goals, our community’s actions must be firmly grounded in the values of the Institute, including behaviors, practices, policies, processes, and rewards that demonstrate our commitment to Georgia Tech:

  1. Students are our top priority.
  2. We strive for excellence.
  3. We thrive on diversity.
  4. We celebrate collaboration.
  5. We champion innovation.
  6. We safeguard freedom of inquiry and expression.
  7. We nurture the well-being of our community.
  8. We act ethically.
  9. We are responsible stewards.

Each faculty and staff member in the College has a responsibility to create a welcoming work environment that supports student success. To foster such a positive, respectful, and engaged environment, community members should contribute in the following ways:

A. Recognize that every team member is vital to the College’s mission and essential to its success

B. Collaborate toward a shared vision

C. Recognize and respect the differences in culture, ethnicity, gender, and other dimensions of diversity

D. Clearly and respectfully communicate with the ability to express concerns

E. without the fear of retribution

F. Understand that College employees have multiple responsibilities, and that priorities are negotiated in a respectful, patient, flexible, and professional manner

G. Support each person’s program of study, research, and professional growth and development
